Stop Identity
Theft
Identity theft is not a Crime.
This may surprise you to know but at present identity theft is not
a crime, although there are plans to make it one. It is only when someone
uses your stolen identity that it becomes punishable by law.
Identity theft occurs when someone steals someone else's identity.
Identity fraud occurs when they use the personal information to buy,
obtain or use something in that persons name.
So how do you stop identity theft?
Well you’ve heard of the say prevention is better than cure. Right?
Well if you want to stop identity fraud from happening
to you then stop identity theft first.
When a fraudster knows key details about you, they can often use that
to get the more sensitive personal information that they need to purchase
items online, get more services, charge bills to your name and commit
identity fraud.
These criminally minded folk will raid your waste or recycle bins
in an attempt to try and find some personal information that they can
later sell on to criminal gangs who then will use it to commit fraud
in your name.
In order to stop identity theft you need to make
sure that whatever you through away doesn’t have any details on
it about you, your family or your business.
The simplest way to stop identity theft is to get into the habit of
shredding all you paper waste before you throw it out.
Things like receipts, credit card and bank statements, telephone bills,
insurance documents, old gas and electricity bills, and even personal
letters and envelopes they were sent in. This may seam drastic but when
you consider that identity theft which leads to identity fraud has grown
by 500% since the year 2000 you be wise to invest in a shredder to stop
identity theft.
